What Is Trauma?

There’s no one way to define trauma, and it can come from many different experiences. At its core, trauma is a word we use to describe the emotional response to very difficult and distressing experiences. The effects of trauma can impact your mental and physical health, your relationships, and your overall quality of life.

Trauma can be categorized into three main categories:

Acute Emotional Trauma

A short-term, intense emotional reaction that follows a single traumatic event such as an accident.

Chronic Emotional Trauma

Prolonged exposure to distressing circumstances, leading to complex and persistent emotional symptoms.

Complex Trauma

Resulting from prolonged, diverse distress, it involves intricate and persistent emotional reactions after a confluence of traumatic events, often of an invasive and interpersonal nature.

Specific sources of trauma may include:

This includes injuries, accidents, or physical assaults that result in harm to the body. It can lead to physical and emotional trauma.

This type of trauma often results from distressing events such as abuse, neglect, loss of a loved one, or witnessing a traumatic event. It can lead to long-lasting emotional distress and may result in conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Sexual trauma encompasses sexual abuse, assault, harassment, or any unwanted sexual experience that causes emotional and psychological distress.

Traumatic experiences during childhood, such as physical, emotional and sexual abuse, emotional neglect, or witnessing domestic violence, can have lasting effects on emotional and psychological well-being.

This form of trauma is experienced by military personnel and veterans who have been exposed to the horrors of war, including combat-related injuries and witnessing violence.

Trauma can also result from natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and wildfires, causing physical harm, loss of property, and emotional distress.

Individuals who undergo serious medical procedures or experience life-threatening illnesses may suffer from medical trauma, which can affect their mental and emotional well-being.

Surviving accidents or near-death experiences can result in trauma, as individuals may struggle with the psychological aftermath of these events.

Living in communities with high levels of violence or exposure to gang-related activities can lead to community-based trauma.

Experiencing discrimination, racism, or cultural oppression can cause trauma related to one’s identity and background.

What are the symptoms of trauma?

Everyone experiences trauma differently; the symptoms can present as physical or physiological, and can include:

We can help you move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I crazy? What's wrong with me?

It’s completely normal to have these thoughts when you’re going through a tough time. You’re not crazy, and there’s nothing wrong with you. Sometimes, life throws us difficult challenges, and it’s a brave step to seek help and support to navigate them.

A therapist can provide a safe space to talk about your thoughts and feelings, offer practical tools to manage them, and help you gain insight into your experiences. Through therapy, you can learn coping strategies, build resilience, and work towards a happier and more fulfilling life.

Yes, it can get easier, and you can get better. Healing takes time, and it’s a journey with ups and downs. With the right support, you can develop the skills to manage your challenges, find relief from distressing thoughts and feelings, and move towards a place of greater well-being and hope for the future.

It’s natural to ask these questions, but sometimes, there aren’t clear answers. What happened is not your fault. Life can be unpredictable and unfair, but you don’t have to do this alone. Therapy can help you explore these questions, find meaning in your experiences, and focus on your journey toward healing rather than dwelling on why it happened.

Persistent thoughts and feelings can be challenging, but they are a natural response to what you’ve been through. Therapy can provide you with strategies to manage and gradually reduce their intensity, giving you more control over your mind and emotions.
